My first “Dog in the spotlight”
is my own beautiful rescue Greyhound Rocket!
I plan to feature a different dog every couple of weeks.
I will share a bit about their personality, their quirks and their behaviour challenges.
Included are some tips on how to manage whatever they have going on.
Whilst every dog is an individual, lots of dogs face similar challenges….
I have worked through a lot of Rocket’s - including separation anxiety and generalised anxiety when I rescued him, but we still have firework phobia going on, and that is my remaining concern to tackle….
Desensitisation can be used for this purpose.
However depending on the severity of the case, results will vary. In the most severe cases medication will need to be in the mix along with lifelong management.

Jack did very well again in his second week of snake avoidance training. If you didn’t see the first week, you can check my prior post.
In this second week we covered the following:
Sequencing his alert behaviour and emergency recall
We started an emergency stop
Homework was to gradually introduce distraction and generalise the behaviour
Follow along for the next steps in Jacks’ Snake Avoidance training!
Next week a snake makes an appearance - no real snakes are used in this training….

A big shout out for two very clever puppies who recently graduated from Puppy School @myvetanimalhospital
Chicharon the Dachshund and Olieo the West Highland Terrier both got an A+ for their loose lead walking!
Somehow the LO in LOOSE leash walking in Chicharon corner just up and disappeared out of nowhere and for the life of me I can’t fix it but I think you get the idea……

Jacks’ family recently brought a weekender down the coast and realised it would be a good idea to do some snake avoidance training with their gorgeous little boy.
In his first week of training we covered the following

He already has an amazing emergency recall that we can use

We spoke about interim management until his training is complete
We discussed measures to reduce snake encounters on your property

Luna snoozing through her separation anxiety reassessment!
Luna was recently adopted by Jorge and Luz, from a family who didn’t have time for her. However they received a complaint from the building management in regard to her barking repeatedly in their absence.
They didn’t delay in reaching out for some help.
We put a management plan in place that meant Luna was not left alone to panic, and got started on some separation anxiety training.
In just three weeks, Luna has become very bored with the training which is our aim, as that’s when dogs switch off, and realise that the process is safe. She is now snoozing on a regular basis through training sessions and her recent reassessment.
We still have a ways to go to gain consistency, but these early signs are very promising….. Go Luna!
Every single Dogs separation anxiety training journey is different and the slower you go in the beginning to create a solid foundation, the quicker you get there in the end. The secret is to go at your dog pace. They are the only one that determines how long feeling safe on their own is going to take for them.

Kirsten has headed back to work!
In May this year Peppa had a sudden onset of separation anxiety, due to a neighbour pouring buckets of water from their balcony onto her when she was out on her balcony
She was terrified. Kirsten was unable to leave her alone without her urinating indiscriminately as she walked out the door.
We put an immediate management plan into place, that meant that Peppa was not left alone to continue panicking and got started on some separation anxiety training.
We worked together for three months, then Kirsten felt confident enough to take the reins and go solo.
She has been back at work for a while now, and Peppa is back to being relaxed on her own and snoozes the day away!
So proud of you Peppa and you too Kirsten for your absolute commitment to your little girls well-being. 👏👏👏

Charlie is one of the most difficult separation anxiety cases I have had for a while.
His level of anxiety means he needs the assistance of medication to be able to learn. Finding the right medication for an individual can take time
His VB seems to have cracked the code “so to speak” and for the first time he looks truly comfortable when doing his training…..
He has actually done a higher time, but he is so much more comfortable now that I consider this to be his PB to date. In SA training it’s not only about the time it’s about the comfort level.
He was snoozing in his recent reassessment something he has never been able to do before.
Excited to see where this leads us now and to be able to help Matt finally be able to get his life back on track and head out and have a social life!
Patience is paying off!
I really feel it’s onwards and upwards from here for this gorgeous boy and his devoted dad Matt who has put in so much work.
Looking forward to celebrating lots more wins

Enrichment that doesn’t involve treats, is something I have been working on for awhile now, and I’ve come up with “The Sensational Sniff Board”
I have been testing it out on individual dogs, Doggy Daycare dogs @myvetdoggydaycare and in Puppy School classes for restless puppies as well.
Great for rainy days, a good circuit breaker for zoomies or unsettled behaviour and helpful in building optimism for anxious dogs.
Providing your dog with enrichment is so important but it’s so often includes food. These boards are perfect if your dog is on a diet or has an upset or sensitive tummy or just loves a good sniff!

Note - if you live anywhere near snakes we wouldn’t include that scent on your doggies board!
