Teenage Dog Classes in Sydney

Serious about reconnecting with your teen?

Believe it or not, they aren’t deliberately trying to be difficult. They just forget to listen sometimes! What seems like selective hearing, is in actual fact, a symptom of a brain that is still under development; not all the wiring is connecting at this point in time!

Just like human teenagers, adolescent dogs can seem emotional; they are working out their own identity, and testing the boundaries. This combined with boundless energy can be exhausting to deal with! Sound familiar?

Our teens program is designed to get you back on the same page — and strengthen your relationship in the process. We focus on cooperation and connection, using fun-filled activities and interactive exercises. We disguise essential training, so much so that your dog won’t even realise they’re learning!

Ready to rein in the rebellion? Let’s get started!

Adolescent Dog Program

What Your Teenager Will Learn

  • Reviewing the Basics: Foundational skills are a must to springboard into the more advanced things we will cover in this course. If your teenager is missing some of the basics, we will catch them up and fill in the gaps.
  • Recall: Your adolescent dog will learn an Emergency Recall and an Emergency Stop. Both are critical at this stage in their life when impulse control is low. We will cover other recalls that motivate them to return as well, as you need more than one option with a teenager!
  • Loose Leash Walking: Is your teenager still pulling on the leash? Let’s look at why, so we can gradually turn this around, have them reconnect with you, and learn how to pass others calmly on a loose leash.
  • Jumping & Attention Seeking: Are they still jumping or perhaps demand barking? Let’s look at why, so we can help them make better choices – together.
  • To look at things calmly: Your teenager will learn to look at things calmly, and then look back at you. This leads into teaching them not to chase other animals, or skateboards, bikes, etc – Yes it’s possible!
  • Self-Control: Let’s transform their frustration into focus. This takes time, patience and consistency, but is definitely achievable.

What You Will Learn

  • How to “speak dog”: Being able to read canine body language is absolutely essential. It allows you to determine how your teenager and other dogs are feeling. This is empowering and helps you make better decisions in regards to their welfare, based on what you see.
  • Enrichment: I can’t emphasize enough how important this is for any dog, but especially for teenagers. They need appropriate channels for excess energy, activities for winding down and mental stimulation. We can help you put together an individualized enrichment plan to meet your teenager’s needs.
  • Management skills: We can help you navigate, what seems like chaos at times, by giving you effective management strategies. Less is more for this age group. They get overwhelmed easily and need calm and supportive guidance through this time in their life.
  • Understanding the teenage brain: They may seem rebellious at this point in time, but when you realise what’s actually happening upstairs, it will put their behaviour into context. We will unpack what’s going on in their brain and this will help you understand them better.

What to Expect at Teen Class
Week 1

For those who need to catch up on the basics, before getting started, access to our Puppy Classroom will be available.

We kick off with two essential real-world, life-saving skills – an Emergency Stop and an Emergency Recall.

Week 2-5

Next up, we work on loose leash walking, passing others politely and self-control.

Each week, we address residual unwanted behaviours, tendencies to chase and ensure your teen is being enriched according to their needs.

Homework

Each week you will receive clear instructions on what you can be working on outside of class.

You can prioritise the areas you want to focus on. Every teenager is an individual and every family’s circumstances are unique.

Application

We give you the confidence and skill to apply what you have learnt in the program to real-life situations.

Training teens takes time, patience, and consistency, but it’s the key to raising cooperative, happy, well-adjusted adults.
