Connection with your dog is everything when you’re on a walk.

There are a couple of ways to reinforce it.

You can proactively ask your dog to LOOK at you, OR you can reinforce them for choosing to do so of their own accord.

It’s a really good thing to build up connection with your puppy, so you don’t end up as that thing at the end of the leash.

We want to teach them to be able to pass other dogs politely and the key to that is connection. They see another dog, you ask them to look at you, and they get reinforced for doing so.

If you practice this, when you REALLY need your dog to look at you, they are much more likely to….

You will get a lot more “loose lead” happening and it’s just wonderful when they turn around and give you that big smile as to say “ being with you is just so much fun!”

Little Miss chunky monkey Mia on the circuit!

Mia is a little chubby around the waistline, so I’ve decided to start doing some low impact exercises with her to see if we can get her looking a little trimmer.

I’m also doing it to mentally stimulate her as well. She lost her soulmate Meeko last year and has really struggled without him , so I figure spending some time with her in this regard is fun as well!

How did I determine that my dog isn’t suitable to take to off leash dog parks?

Rocket is BIG black Greyhound. He is large for his breed and he’s very fast.

Please note I’m not suggesting that ALL Greyhounds are not suited to dog parks. I am talking about my dog.

Whatever he chases he will catch. He will then play growl very loudly, and no doubt look and sound incredibly scary to smaller or timid dogs.

Am I prepared to put another dog through this experience, who doesn’t know him for the fun loving guy that he is. NO

As a trainer I work with anxious dogs on a regular basis, and I know that an experience like this, could be a huge setback for an anxious individual or incredibly scary for a puppy.

He doesn’t miss out. He gets to run and play with his cousins Beau and Foxy at my sister’s farm in a closed safe area on a regular basis.

He runs with his girlfriend Susie another Greyhound, in a similar safe environment and he absolutely loves his daily on leash walks.

He is very sound around other dogs in a social sense, and can pass them politely on the leash. Even when other dogs react to him, because of his size and colour, he just looks the other way and continues on his way.

I am so proud of him for being such a neutral and well balanced dog socially.

But is he suitable for a dog park? No I don’t believe he is…..
